I love the voice Billy West uses for this big lug. The clueless arrogance, oily pseudo-charm, and the witless, remorseless bungling come shining through. It's damn-near perfect. Billy's the best.

If you didn't go, you missed this :

3:30-4:30 Futurama - Matt Groening is proud to announce the long-awaited return of the animated sci-fi comedy classic Futurama! Matt and executive producer David X. Cohen will be on the dais, accompanied by writer Ken Keeler, animation directors Peter Avanzino and Dwayne Carey- Hill, and for the first time together on stage in any universe, actors Billy West (Fry), Katey Sagal (Leela), John DiMaggio (Bender), and Maurice LaMarche (Kif Kroker)! The cast and crew will entertain your questions and present a sneak peek at Bender’s Big Score! in glorious wide-screen format! Moderated by Bill Morrison. Ballroom 20

!!!
A small futurama comic which "bridged the gap" between the last episode and the first movie was handed out to all attending and the cast did a reading of it. It was spine-tingly!!!

From http://men.style.com/gq/features/full?id=content_5179&pageNum=2

Q: So have you been offered any other movie parts?

A: Yes! I actually just performed a voice-over role in a movie last week. I am reprising my role as a disembodied head in Futurama, which is being made into a movie. There are a significant number of people who appear not to know or care that I was Vice President of the United States, but who are very tuned into the fact that I uttered the immortal line, “I have ridden the mighty moonworm.”

Q: And that’s so much more important. So do you think you’ll get an Oscar nomination?

A: For the disembodied head?

I just started watching Futurama on DVD about 6 months ago, I never saw the origial broadcasts. I got the first season, and got hooked, now I've got all 4 seasons in my library! I'm just finished the 2nd season Christmas show, wow, what a spin on Santa Claus!

My favorite so far is " A Head In The Poles", which has to be one of the best cartoons I've ever seen, ever!! I thought "Hell Is Other Robots" was good, and I thought the Simpsons were good, but that was fantastic. Just the concept of Nixon's head running for president was far out. Into the 4rd show, it seems that almost every line of the second season is tight and overall on another level beyond the first season. Does the show keep getting better, or is it going to peak soon?

http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=24076

from the article:

The script, "Bender's Big Score," is a DVD movie divided into four broadcastable episodes. I don't know how well each episode stands on its own as a self-contained piece of Futurama, but as an arc, the story is delightful and truly epic in scope.

As for the story, it comes from Ken Keeler and David Cohen, and it's very very big. Basically, "Planet Express" undergoes a hostile takeover and its new new owners make use of Bender for some criminal shenanigans. What follows is... a very big plot. Which I don't want to ruin. Because it's a lot of fun, very surprising, and something fans should wait for. Making return visits are: the Nibblonians, Seymour, Barbados Slim, Morbo, Santa Bot, the "God" space entity (probably not for the last time), Al Gore, and yes, sexlexia sufferer Zapp Brannigan (although all too briefly). Not to mention space battles, songs, and even a little time travel.

By episode's end, the world of Futurama is left more or less unchanged, and intact for the next three movies (and beyond?). The real development in these episodes is the elaboration of the mythology of the series. Questions you've asked, and haven't asked, are answered. The movie resembles many fan favorite episodes in terms of structure. There's a lot of similarities to "The Why of Fry," "Time Keeps on Slipping," and "The Luck of the Fryish" as well as "Jurrasic Bark," and more loosely, "The Farnsworth Paradox." Fry / Leela fans have plenty to chew on, and if that romance has ever elicited a tear or two, well, grab a hanky, it may do so again.

I rarely post to any of the tribes I belong to...but I decided to 'hit them up' in my time of need.
I am a single woman, 33, no pets,non-smoker,fully employed @ UCSF as a social worker .Currently I am in a roomate situation that I've lived in for 3yrs.The Owners are now selling this building. I am clean, resourceful, friendly, easy going, and relatively quiet. The goal is to rent in an area close to public transportation. My credit isn't immaculate(school loans and an eviction in 93, unfortunatley) but I can provide personal and work references as well as proof of income.

If you know of anyone looking for a roomate,a sublet filler or own property with studios/one bedrooms, please send me an message.

Have a Fab day and enjoy your weekend!

And I gotta say...What a great episode! One of the best. And Mom is such a brilliantly caustic & funny character. Probably the best recurring one on the entire series. What a vile, venomous bitch! The ideal bad guy, she is. Whoever does the voice for her is a voice acting genius.

Just saw one the other day. It was like "YAHHHHH Bender! We want Bender!" for a moment but then they kicked him out of the future car and i was not amused. Granted it is classical for Matt Groening and team to bag on their other groups which are their own team and people, I would like to see Bender offending the simposns on their own show. I think he deserves it. Wouldn't that be awesome futurama meets the Simpsons. It'd be like Jetsons meets the Flinstones. [Gasp!] they could make a movie out of it! [Gasp!] Bender could be made to look like Rosey on one scene and say something like "No problem Mr. S" .... [cough] while he's stealing their wallets of course. Who's with me!!!

This just in from the future (well, Australia, anway)
"...now it appears the fans have been heard.

Variety magazine recently reported that talks were under way at Fox TV, which also produces Family Guy, to make new episodes of the cartoon and other industry sources list the show as "in production" with the actors who voiced the series back under contract."

And Why the Robots?

I have a theory that the anthropomorphoid robots will serve a greater purpose. Their society is awfully tolerant of these manufactured beings with less-than-perfect AI's, to the extent of giving them the right to vote. Also, I always think Mom has some long-range strategy that the rest of us "ignorant pukes" can't see. For example, Bender is kind of dangerous... "Oh that's right, you guys hate fire, don't you?"

I think it would be extremely valuable for the robots to live among humans to improve their heuristic processing, especially if the heuristic engines are collected when the robots die. *might this be part of the once-mentioned Farnsworth contribution to Mom's Robots from 50-100 years prior?

Why would they need to develop really, really good robot AI's? To take care of the humans as we loose all of skills, so we don't get eaten by the underground wookies? To make more humans, since the population of Earth seems to be lower in humans than it is today (I mean everybody seems to know everybody else)? To send out as ambassadors to other places? To be vessels for future humans?

In one episode Fry can't count the rings in Nibbler's tooth because there are 5 of them.

"You'd have to be some kind of genius to count all those rings?"

In Bender's tomb they take a sip of the liquor there and Fry says "What proof is this? Some huge number?!"

Clearly Fry thinks 5 is a huge number.

"Pay heed to the consumer? Can it be true? Certainly by producing content the consumer wants, like Family Guy, Serenity, and possibly Futurama, it is. If so, it's better late than never, but no one should be fooled into thinking that content developer attacks on fair use rights will abate. Still, if the consumer can influence the 'what' and 'when' of content, all I can say is FOX Broadcasting can bite my shiny metal ass."

Futurama May Live Again on Fox

Source: Variety January 4, 2006

Variety reports that talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated series Futurama, which takes place in the next millennium.

The studio is in early discussions to put Futurama back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series -- although it's too soon to tell where those episodes might end up, adds the trade.

The final original episode of Futurama aired on Fox in August 2003. But since then, the series has found new life -- and fans -- via DVD releases and repeatedly high-rated airings on the Cartoon Network.

Futurama remains popular enough that Comedy Central even stole away off-net rights to the show's repeats late last year; it will switch to the comedy channel in 2008.

A similar resurgence in interest for Family Guy persuaded 20th Century Fox TV to revive that show, which has produced two seasons of new episodes and a DVD since coming back from the dead. Family Guy now resides as Fox's Sunday 9 p.m. tentpole.

The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and "Simpsons" vet David X. Cohen were behind Futurama, which premiered on Fox in March 1999.

Hey everybody. I've written a small jetpak (a collected package of links, images and information) about Futurama, and I'd like to have some feedback, both on the Jetpak and the whole idea of it all.

If you'd like to add something to it, and write some more about Futurama, I'd love it, and it'll make it possible to have a larger Futurama group on the site.

I watched Godfellas last night on Adult Swim... it has got to be the most brilliantly written and acted episodes ever. John DiMaggio was amazing, Billy West was amazing... Katey Segal. Produced some of the best quotes as well...

Bender: "I was God once."
God: "Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died."

Monk: "This is the worst crazy sect I've ever been in!"

Gypsy: "There is perhaps one way. Have you heard of the monks of Deshuba?"
Fry: "I've... NOT heard of them..."

Fry: "Is there anything religion can do to help me find my friend?"
Pastor: "Well, we could join together in prayer."
Fry: "Uh huh, but is there anything useful we can do?"
Pastor: "No."

God: "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

I am Fry!

Yeah, I know he's the lead character & he's the one that the viewer (us guys, anyway) are supposed to relate to, but goddamnit......I have just about all of his negative personality traits in abundance. His laziness, cluelessness, thickness, apathy (even toward pursuing the opposite sex), excessive attachment to TV, and his slow-on-the-uptake demeanor are all my own. Fry's lack of distinction or talent in just about every aspect of his being ring painfully true. Even when he manages to get something right, it's almost always the result of an accident & NOT the outcome of skill or clear thinking. Fry's profound lack of motivation & the grinding wage-slave existence (not to mention the lowbrow dependence on junk culture) that this attitude engenders are all too familiar to a guy like me. The only things missing from Phillip J. Fry's profile are the constant swirling of pot smoke & the emotionally parasitic friends--he's lucky to even have Bender!

I will say this, though: my parents weren't the indifferent, sports-obsessed yahoos that Fry's were. I am thankful for that much.

And, like Fry, I'm pretty decent & well-meaning at the bottom of it all...

But the main thing that strikes me about Fry's personality is the willful, almost blithe ignorance he displays. One has the feeling that this gross underachiever could be a real shining star (or even a hero!) if only he gave half a damn.

Does anyone else agree with all this? Do you too see Fry's bumpy nose & existential blank stare in the mirror? Does Groening know his target audience all too well, or what?

Favorite Leela Lines

I've had a few from "The Route Of All Evil" stuck in my head"

"Stop bickering you two. We can all fight when we're drunk."

"You're right. Alcohol is very bad. For children. But once you turn twenty-one, it becomes very, very good. "

And from "The Cyber House Rules"

"All I want is a boyfriend who when you go out with him no one says he's crummy."

Those are all I can think of at the moment, but I think Leela is one of the best characters on the show. She's a good foil for Fry, and her lines are often just as funny. Plus, Katey Segal does her voice so flawless and expertly, which adds so much to her level of "funnieness".

For me it was in the episode when the gang goes inside the internet.

There was a gatekeeper outside the entrence to an adult website making sure everyone who entered was at least 18. First to enter was a teenage boy in a suit who was let in after a verbal assurance that he was, indeed, old enough. Next in line was a pre-adolescent boy who did the same. Last to enter was a toddler/baby who when asked if he was of age, giggled adorably and spit out his pacifier. Laughed my ass off!

Comic-Con 2005: IGN DVD Exclusive - Futurama Direct-to-Video Greenlit
Bender, Fry & Co. set to return.

July 15, 2005 - In the first of IGN's exclusive Video Blogs direct from San Diego's Comic-Con International, voice actor Billy West (Fry, Zoidberg, the Professor, and many more voices for many more shows) revealed to us that a brand-new direct-to-video Futurama movie has been greenlit. Not only that, but there is also an option for a second movie as well.

With the model established by Family Guy's return – where a direct-to-video movie eventually spawned the show's return to Fox primetime as well – could the much-missed Futurama also be on the way back to a set near you?

But you might as well see and hear it from the source:

http://media.filmforce.ign.com/media/048/048664/vids_1.html

Pick your format and prepare for wonderment. Billy West tells an autobiographical anecdote which sounds so much like Fry, you'll wonder why his hair is the wrong color. And then he drops a small bombshell.

I will not choose a new digital phone unless I can make it play the Futurama theme. The wanker at the Verizon store will look at me funny, but I will say "I don't give a rat's ass what this phone can or cannot do. I don't care if this phone is highly skilled in Ancient Eastern Oral Sex Techniques. If you can make it play Futurama on a ring, I'll buy it. If you can't, I'm walking."

Futurama Video Game

It came out for Xbox & PS2 in '03, but I just got around to playing it; I played the Xbox version. What a poorly-designed, frustrating experience this was! The in-game camera is wonky and seriously aggravating, the levels are too short, and the enemies, though colorful & funny, are easily defeated. This is definetly a game for fans only.

The are good points, however. The inside references, the cel-shaded graphics (But, why is Leela's hair hot pink instead of purple?), and the participation of most of the voice-actors (no Amy though, *sigh*) make it a cut above most TV show/movie cash-in games. The enviroments are inventive and fun to behold, and the character's exclamations (especially Bender's) are LOL funny.

Overall, this game was rushed, short, and incomplete. It could've been so much better. But, having said that, it's still worth a play-through for us fans; a definite rental at least. The little details will make you smile--like an enemy robot spotting Bender and yelling, "It's that Gender-Bender!", the noisy Nibblonians you must rescue to unlock bonuses, or the robot pizzeria owner in the New New York level.

I'm of course talking about Leela here, and I myself imagine that I wouldn't, mainly for two reasons: I love the strangely spunky attitude and basic personally of Leela; then, the actress who voices for Leela is damned sexy.

I know, I know, the second reason's invalid 'cause the question carries the assunption that I would be having sex with a living version of Leela and no one else, still .....

Okay... almost the return of Futurama.

I couldn't believe it when I read this so I'll let you all be shocked too. FYI - Billy West does the voices of Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Zoidberg and many, many more...

******************************************************

Posted by Billy West on Billy West's page:

Top of the morning to you---and the rest of the day to
myself.Ladies and gentlemen,boisenberries,pestals and
stamens....there's encouraging news. Well,I spoke to David
X.Cohen because we did promos for a new Futurama
compilation and he said that they did have talks with the
top guys at FOX and they were extremely impressed with the
sales of the Futurama DVDs.The idea was to make a Futurama
movie right to DVD and then a 2nd and a 3rd.That's what's
being discussed.Fox is trying to figure out a budget for
the whole project, and it sounded like David X. was very
jazzed!
I would love more than anything to do that show again.I
thought it was best experience on every
level...creatively,voice-wise,writing,animation and the
laughs. The laughs.Writers and performers that respected
each other.
No derelict genius looking down the barrel of his own
complacency wrecking everything in his wake.
Wouldn't it be nice?
A great day to be us.What's better than that?

Love is in the air and so is mercury but we're working on
it.

I like the commentaries too. John D'imaggio is also a new hero of mine. I can barely immitate the professor's voice, but I definately can't do Bender's. Boo hoo. Oh well that's what the record button on my cell phone if for. Go Bender! Go Bender!

Which Futurama episode do you enjoy the least? Mine's the one with the immigrants who own a pizza place across the street from Planet Express. So boring! And I'm not into "The Honking," although there are some funny lines.

(futurama) was cancelled for a while, but thanks to heavy re-run airing by the Cartoon Network, Fox has ordered new episodes. Look this season for the return of Santa Claus, the homicidal killing robot.

Some of my favorite moments in Futurama are when the whole gang is together... or any group of people really and they all start shouting incomprehesably as a mob then when it all dies down one of the people says something that usually turns out to be pretty funny.

Examples:
Fry suggests they party one more time for Slurms McKenzy. Everyone just lets out a cheer except for Zoidburg who says "Wammy Wazzle" half-heartedly trying to imitate Slurms.

The sink disposal tells Amy that there's jewelery in the drain, she goes to reach her hand in and everyone starts shouting expressions of fear and warning. The professor, about a half a beat later, says "Moron!"

Fry goes to cut a slice out of a critical part of his own brain and the worms come up to beg him to stop, as their frantic cries settle down one worm says "take it easy man" like a police negotiator in a crisis situation.

These unexpected little bits are clever and they add realisim to the show because that really is how groups of people talk sometimes.

They say that the Planet Express ship's propusion is able to move the entire universe in order to get the ship from one place to another. I guess that could work if the Planet Express ship is the only spaceship in the unvierse. But presumably, there are potentially millions of ships in the Futurama universe that use the same type of propusion that the Planet express ship has. So unless all the starships in the universe are moving the universe in the same direction at the same time and at the same speed, I don't see how that "moving the universe" propulsion can work. "But it's just a cartoon." Yeah, I know it's a cartoon. But I just wanted to bring it up anyway.

Hey I'm new to this forum but always loved the show... Fry has always been my favortie Character and I wanted to start up a best quotes thread... here a few great ones..

Fry: Wait! You're the only friend I have!
Bender: You really want a robot for a friend?
Fry: Yeah ever since I was 6.

____________________________________________

Fry: How could they even know about a show from 1000 years ago?
Prof: Well, Omicron Persei 8 is about 1000 light years away, so the electro-magnetic waves would just recently have gotten there, you see...
Fry: Magic, Got it.

____________________________________________

*Fry sees a balloon go past saying 'Happy New Year 3000!'*
Fry: Wait a minute, is that blimp accurate?
Leela: Yep! It's December 31st 2999.
Fry:*thinks how far he's time travelled* My God! A million years!

Hypno Toad or Brain Slug?

mika asked, in a different tribe topic "Who would win in a fight (for our brains, that is)? Hypno Toad or Brain Slug? Will Brain Slug be hypnotized by Hypno Toad? Or will Brain Slug leave Hypno Toad with nothing left to hypnotize?"

I found this to be a facinating question. So much so I thought we should open a seperate topic just to discuss it.

besides Jurassic Bark (weep).

Why did they make Zoidberg poor? Why would he be any poorer than Fry?

I never did find that funny. The only way you knew he was poor was by him saying "I'm so poor!" all the time.

OK, here's an easy (but possibly lame) topic for all of us to participate in and enjoy to get things going here...

What are your favorite lines from the show?

Personally, I'm fond of
"I don't know how to swim in jelly as far as I know!"

And I love Amy's curses, like "shmeesh!"

Plot Holes

Okay, Aside from real plot holes that exist in the show compared to other sci-fi shows (because it would be boring to go ahead and patch them). I think I found a hole in the plot of futurama itself. In the episodes "the day the earth stood stupid" and "the why of fry" the giant brains were able to be defeated because of fry inbreading himself in "roswell that ends well". His brain is supposed to run on non-beta waves. That being said, He had the worms in "Parasite Lost" they were repairing him... including his brain. That should have fixed the problem with his beta waves. Ofcourse, there are several possible reasons why that didn't happen. One, Fry undid that work when he was fighting the worm king. Two, The worms were forced out before they could get to that task. Three, Some of the worm workers in revenge for being cast out undid the new connections. OR Four, something I haven't thought of.

What do you think?

P.S.
Oh my God! Am I a fan boy?
